2024 Royalty Candidates
July 25th ~ 28th, 2024 Blueberry Fest Royalty Contest Open to Boys and Girls
Application forms are now available for the Iron River Lions Club Blueberry Fest Royalty Contest. Both boys and girls can compete in the event. Queen and King contestants must be between the ages of 13 and 20. Princess and Prince contestants must be between the ages of 6 and 12, and will compete in a separate category. One candidate will win in each age category. All contestants earn a portion of their raffle ticket sales for their hard work. Applicants need not be residents of Iron River but should have some connection to the area. Winners will represent the Iron River Lions Club in area parades in the coming year promoting the annual Blueberry Festival. Blueberry Queen Candidates
Memphis Laakonen, age 14, will be entering the 9 th grade at Ashland High School in the fall. She is the daughter of Richard and Lyndsay Laakonen. Science is Memphis’ favorite subject in school and she participates in wrestling, track & field, cross country, softball and student council. Memphis enjoys photography, painting, golfing, hunting and fishing in her spare time. Future plans after graduating from high school include attending college to study sports medicine and become an athletic trainer.
Blueberry Princess Candidates
Angie VanNess is 10 years old and will be entering the 5 th grade at Bryant Elementary School in Superior, WI. Her parents are Cara and Dennis VanNess. Math is Angie’s favorite subject in school and she participates in basketball. Her favorite things to do include riding her bike, roller blading, camping and swimming. She participates in Cub Scouts and will be in Arrow of Light in the fall. Angie would like to be a teacher and a mom when she grows up.
Makenzie Holtzman is a ten- year-old candidate for Blueberry Fest princess. Mackenzie is the daughter of Kate and Matt Holtzman and a resident of Iron River. In the fall she will be entering the 5th grade at Iron River Elementary School where her favorite subject is art. She participates in basketball and softball. In her spare time Mackenzie enjoys art, swimming and sports. This year she received the “best rebounder” award in basketball. Her plans for the future include working at her parents’ greenhouse.
Blueberry King Candidates
Gage Olson, age 14, will be in the 9 th grade at Washburn High School in the fall. He is the son of Shelly and Chris Olson. Tech Ed is his favorite subject in school and he is a member of the ski team. In his spare time Gage enjoys, fishing, hunting, biking and 4-wheeling. Gage would like to be a plumber when he grows up.
Blueberry Prince Candidates
Jake Probst, son of Steve and Beth Probst of Iron River, is 10 years old. He will be entering the 6th grade at Northwestern Middle School in the fall. Jake’s favorite classes at school are gym, math and recess. He participates in basketball and baseball. In his spare time, Jakes enjoys swimming, baseball, video games and playing with his friends. He has won awards at school for high scores in math and English language arts. In the future Jake aspires to be a Navy Seal and President!
